Micro habits to make your life better

Having big dreams is essential to improve your life but we often focus on the goals and the arrival instead of the choices and habits that will help us work toward those goals.

You might want to cultivate a positive mindset, healthier lifestyle, be more mindful etc. Those are great and ambitious goals but most of the time they are too vague to the point you won’t know where to start and what to do. No wonder people give up on their New Year’s resolutions after a few weeks.

Implementing small habits in your daily life can help you transform your life for the better.

What are micro habits ?

Micro habits are small actions that you can easily incorporate in your everyday life. Developing tiny habits can seem insignificant at first, but when practiced consistently they can lead to incredible results.

Because micro habits are manageable and not time consuming they are easy to incorporate even in a busy schedule. 

Examples of a micro habits: 

“I want to read 30 books this year” becomes “ I will read for 20 minutes everyday”
“I want to be healthier” can become something like “I will do a 5-10 minutes workout at home everyday”

What are the benefits of micro habits ?

Micro habits are small positive changes that have many benefits for your overall well-being. Here are some of them:

  • Promote mindfulness 
  • Easy to stick with
  • Help overcome procrastination
  • Improve health

How to start with micro habits ?

1. Identify your big goals

Start by writing a list of your big goals. That’s the first step to get start with micro habits

2. Break them into small steps

Once you have identified your larger goals, break them into bite-sized manageable steps.

Let’s say one of your goal is to read 30 books this year you can break this large goals into small steps:
– carry a book everywhere – read for 20 minutes everyday – replace your phone with a book before bed

    3. Start small

    The concept of micro habits is to make them seem so easy that you stick to them without realizing it. Focus on consistency instead of quantity.

    4. Set reminders

    Use your phone and set alarms to remind yourself to do your micro habits.

    For instance, I want to meditate more this year so I set 3 alarms, one in the morning, one at lunch and one before bed. This way I don’t forget to meditate and I only do it for 5 to 10 minutes each time.
